Welcome to Galway, the City of the Tribes
If you’re planning on visiting Galway sometime soon, or in the near future, hopefully you’ll find some helpful information on our blog about this very famous city.
A visit to Galway will be well rewarded and is on most peoples list of “must visit” places in Ireland. Despite it’s small size, there’s plenty to do for a long weekend or more. It’s also easy to arrange a day trip to Connemara, Co.Clare or the famous Aran Islands.
Around the city there’s plenty of places to eat and grab a drink, especially the latter. There’s plenty of shopping options, shows, walking tours, cookery courses, craft courses, fishing and boating. There’s also the Galway museum and a few smaller museums worth a visit.
The best part about visiting is the compact size of the City, so walking is really the best way to get around. There’s a pleasant canal walk, which starts just down from the Salmon Weir bridge and continues down towards the Claddagh. The Salthill promenade is the longest in Ireland and can be undertaken from any point along it’s route.
One of the main sights in the City, is the imposing Cathedral built in 1965 which has some fantastic stained glass windows.
The Galway farmers market is well worth a visit on Saturdays and Sundays, although Sunday is a much smaller affaire. It has a great choice of food options from bagels, crepes, artisan breads, organic fruit and veg and lots more.
Festivals are a huge part of Galway culture and outside of the two biggest, the Galway Arts Festival and the Galway Races, there are several others, such as, Cuirt literature festival, The Galway food festival, Galway Film Fleadh and the famous Galway Oyster festival to name a few.
Live music venues are another great part of Galway nightlife and a few dozen bars will have some sort of live music. Both Monrows and the RóisÍn Dubh are hughly popular with everything from local, national and international acts.
